冬日的清晨，長城腳下的一個村莊裏一聲「看新媳婦去呀！」幾個孩子湧向金香家門口。此時，母親正跪求金香嫁給一個啞巴，再換回啞巴妹妹給金香的哥哥。雖然金香大哭又鬧，一陣鞭炮後，還是被啞巴丈夫帶走了。田間路上，小鳳和來了媽各背著賒來的-綸線，準備進城去賣。突然傳來金香的呼喚聲，她是偷著跑出來的。三個女人終於進了城，她們在城中艱難的生活著，但是她們沒有對生活失去信心，用自己的辛勤勞動換來了她們該得的一切。最後三個女人提著大包、小包自豪而又欣喜地回到村裏，鄉親們圍著她們說笑。金香的啞巴丈夫和另一個男人氣勢洶...
